We’ll put you through your paces for English A, too, so be sure to get your Stabroek News every Sunday and follow along. Now read on and enjoy your CXC English page! Here’s a plan that can work for ANY story: ● ● ● How did it all start? What brought things to a head?

What was the most exciting/scary/moving aspect of the entire incident?

What was the outcome?

How can you make that story even better? You can add a bit of description. The key to writing a good story is to help your readers imagine they are actually there! And you do that by describing in detail what you can see, hear, smell, feel, taste. Of course you probably won’t work on all of the senses, but certainly you can work on a couple of them.

Decide where you think a bit of description would work best, and add two or three sentences to re-create the scene.

Is your story set at the creek? Well, describe the water, the bush, the sand, the butterflies and so on.

Is your story set in the market? Tell us about the vendors fixing the items on their stalls, the smells of the various products, the voices of people selling, the faces of friends meeting and greeting.

Yes, about 80-100 words of description will make a world of difference to your story. Try it and see. Writing is fun, and who knows, you may discover a hidden talent you didn’t know you had!
