Cops destroy Wisroc ganja fields

A man is now in custody after the police conducted a drug eradication exercise at Wisroc, Linden on Friday afternoon and destroyed several acres of cultivated cannabis and two make-shift camps.
The exercise was carried out between 16:30 hrs and 18:00 hrs on Friday, the Guyana Police Force said in a statement yesterday.
An estimated 5,300 plants, ranging in height from six inches to five feet, and two make-shift camps were found and burnt, the police said.
The man in custody, a 22-year-old who hails from South Ruimveldt, is assisting with the investigation, A section of one of the fields which were later destroyed by police (Guyana Police Force photo) the police said.
Meanwhile, the police also reported the arrest of a Lethem resident who was allegedly found in possession of 70 grammes of cannabis on Friday evening.
According to the police, enquiries disclosed that the 39-year-old man was walking on the Takatu Bridge.
“Upon seeing the police, he quickly dropped a bag which was retrieved and discovered to have contained the illegal substance,” the statement said, before adding that the arrest was made by ‘F’ Division ranks on mobile patrol.
