3. North America

► North America is the third largest continent in area and the fourth in population.

► The North American continent includes Canada, Greenland, the United States, Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean islands.

► In this continent are the largest fresh water lake in the world – Lake Superior and the third longest river in the world – the Mississipp­i.

► It is the only continent that has every kind of climate, from the dry bitter cold of the Arctic to the hot and rainy of the tropics.

► It is the world’s largest producer of wheat, maize and soybean.

► Cuba, a country in North America is the world’s largest exporter of sugar. It is known as the “sugar bowl” of the world.

► Niagara Falls is North America’s most famous waterfall. ► North America lies entirely in the Northern Hemisphere.

Look at the map of North America, below and identify the countries that comprise the continent. For you to do 1. Look at the equator line on a map of the world or globe. Explain what the equator line is.

2. Give the names of at least five countries in Africa and their capitals.
