GRADE FIVE SCIENCE
Independence greetings to you! Did you have a good time enjoying independence activities in your different communities? We are all proud to be Guyanese. How many years are we an independent nation? What things changed when we became independent? Name the different presidents that Guyana has had over the years. Call a friend and discuss your answers.
For the past few weeks we have been looking at animals. Let’s continue. We found out that there are different categories of animals. We saw that there are vertebrates and invertebrates. Of the types of vertebrates we looked at mammals. Discuss the characteristics of mammals.
■ We found that all mammals have bones including a backbone. These support the body. ■ We also found that all mammals have lungs and
breathe dry air. ■ Just like humans who are mammals as well, all
the mammals have fur or hair on their bodies. ■ All mammals are warm blooded. ■ Their body temperature does not change
according to the environment around them. ■ All female mammals feed their young on milk. ■ They give birth to young alive except for the
platypus and the spiny anteater.
Name mammals that are:
Find these words in the word search below: mammal, dogs, rabbit, born, suckle, young, blooded, spine, bone, warm, temperature, environment, covered, fur, skin, milk, hair, ears, elephant, cold Have lots of fun!
Let’s now look at BIRDS. Birds are really lovely creatures. There are so many, many types of birds. Name as many as you can.
Get together with a friend and name birds found in Guyana. How many did you name?
Look at the picture below showing many different birds. How many of them do you recognise?
You can find their names below their pictures. Look carefully at the beaks, their feet, their different feathers.
Birds are the only animals that are covered with feathers. Are the feathers all the same? Check this out.
Birds fly. Is there any other animal that flies? Do all birds fly?
Birds are warm blooded. Like mammals, their body temperature does not change according to the temperature of their surroundings.
Birds have a very special shape that helps them to move. Describe this shape.
Go around the neighbourhood and observe the different birds around. Draw and colour a few of them.
Until next time, goodbye, Boys and Girls.
