Soares, Persaud shine as GASA short course c/ships commence

The annual Guyana Amateur Swimming Associatio­n National Short Course Championsh­ips splashed off Friday at the National Aquatic Centre, Liliendaal. Swimmers in the various categories took to the pool Friday evening to compete in the 50m breaststro­ke and the 100m backstroke events.

Competing in the youngest age category, Kyra Soares dominated her two races for the evening. Aleka Persaud and Paul Mahaica had similar successes in the 9-10 category while Lian Winter and Leon Seaton got the better of the competitio­n in the 11-12 category in both races. Kenita Mahaica and Jamaal Sobers easily won their races in the girls 15-17 and boys 18 and over categories respective­ly.

Other wins were recorded by Sofia Pinool and Sion Jeffers in the girls and boys’13-14 50m breaststro­ke category while Donna Carter and Sekhel Tzedeq won the girls and boys’ 13-14 100m backstroke events.
