-

A pensioner died along the Williamsburg Village, Corentyne Public Road yesterday morning, after he was struck by a hire car.

The car that struck Winston Williams, 68, a retired plumber for the Region Six administration, of Lot 6 A Campbell Street, Williamsburg Village, was reported to have been speeding when the accident occurred around 7 am. The driver, a 47year-old Georgetown resident, has since been arrested.

According to information gathered, Williams was heading north along the public road when the car, HC 3825, which was proceeding west towards New Amsterdam, allegedly at a fast rate, struck him. While the car landed in a nearby drain, Williams was picked up and taken to the Port Mourant Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

His daughter, Luwamia Leitch, 39, of Sandvoort Village, West Canje, stated that she was told that her father went to the market and was proceeding home when he was struck. She said, “He stopped and spoke with a girl from the wash bay [located in Williamsburg] and then he was on his way home.”

She described her father as being a jovial person, who loved socialising with friends.

Sunday Stabroek was told that the hire car driver usually works the Georgetown to Skeldon, Upper Corentyne route. A breathalyser test was administered to him at the scene of the accident and it did not reveal any alcohol content in his breath.

‘B’ Division traffic ranks are still investigating the accident.
