Before Guyana became an independent nation from Britain, on May26, 1966, the Queen or King of Britain presented awards. Most of those awards were given to British citizens for their distinguished service to their colony; only a few went to citizens of then British Guiana. The names of persons for the first National Awards after Guyana’s Independence were announced on the day Guyana became a Republic, February 23, 1970. The awards were presented by the President of Guyana on Independence Day, May 26, 1970 at an Investiture Ceremony. This happened annually until 2001. There was an absence of National Awards from 2002 until 2011 when another national awardees list was published in May of 2011. Then again from 2015 the National Awards list was published annually on the occasion of Guyana’s Independence Anniversary and presented by the President in October.

Guyana’s highest award is the Order of Excellence. In second place is the Order of Roraima. Then in third place is the Cacique Crown of Honour. Next week we shall find out more about these and other National Awards.

Goodbye boys and girls. Have a blessed week!
