Gomes, Verwey to square off in category A final

Kirstin Gomes and Nicholas Verwey will come up against each other in a highly anticipate­d category ‘A’ final of the Lucozade Handicap Squash Tournament after earning semi-final wins last evening at the Georgetown Club Squash Court.

Gomes (-2), who is one of the better junior players in the country, worked her way past Mohryan Baksh (+2) in straight sets 15-8, 15-13 in the first semi-final of the evening.

Verwey, on the other hand, got his way with one of the pre-tournament’s favourite Abosaide Cadogan in straight sets 15-10, 15-14 to book his spot in the final against Gomes.

The category ‘A’ plate final will be decided between Kamir Khan and Zackory Persaud, who both completed semi-final wins.

Khan in his, downed Dhiren Persaud 15-7, 15-5 while Persaud had the better of Luis Da Silva 15-5, 15-12.

Meanwhile, Nyron Joseph (-16) once again displayed his endurance and range to defeat Steven Xavier in first open semifinal 15-9, 15-9.

Joseph will face Deje Dias who defeated Regan Pollard 12-15, 15 -5, 15-2 in the final.

The open plate final will be decided between Ian Mekdeci and Joshua Abdool.

Mekdeci (+5) worked his way into the final by defeating Ashley Khalil (4) 15-4, 15-6 while Abdool defeated John Maikoo 1510, 15-13.
