GRADE SIX SCIENCE

-

Hello Boys and Girls, Have you had a good week? Did you participate in any of the Mashramani competitions for your school? How well did your school perform? Have lots of fun. Look for different types of machines – simple and complex. Were you able to do lots of Science activities at school? Did you have fun with last week’s exercises? We have been looking at energy and so far we have looked at:

This week we will continue investigating energy. Let’s look at heat energy and how it moves. As we found out earlier, heat is indeed a form of energy. It can move in three ways-

(i) By conduction Conduction occurs when energy is passed directly from one item to another. If you stir a pot of soup on the stove with a metal spoon, the spoon will get hot. The heat is being conducted from the hot soup to the spoon. Metals are excellent conductors of heat energy. What materials are poor conductors of heat? Did you suggest wood or plastics? These are poor or bad conductors of heat energy. That’s why a pan is usually made of metal while the handle is made of strong plastic.

(ii)By convection What is energy How energy is measured Different types and forms of energy Energy can be changed Energy can be stored

Convection is the movement of gases or liquids from a cooler to a warmer area. If the pot of soup were made of glass, we would see the movement of the convection currents in the pot. The warmer soup moves from the heated area at the bottom of the pot to the top, where it is cooler. The cooler soup then moves to take the place of the warmer soup. The movement is in a circular pattern within the pan. ringing? Did you hear any horns or other sounds of passing vehicles? What about the sound of birds whistling in the trees? Are the sounds that you hear in the country areas all the same as the ones you often hear in the town or in the city?

What sounds can your body make? Think about - the mouth - the hand - the nose - the stomach - the anus

What a noisy body we have! Sounds can be made in different ways. How are sounds being made in the following pictures? Yes, we can make sounds by blowing, knocking and plucking.

Now look again at some more pictures. Have you ever experienced any of these situations?
