Members of the diplomatic community were on Friday given a tour of several city operations by Mayor Ubraj Narine.

The aim of the tour was to initiate partnerships and cooperation in the areas of infrastructure, tourism, commerce, trade and training, among others, Narine said.

Narine told Stabroek News via phone that the tour was very successful and the city council is currently working to organise a follow up meeting with the diplomatic community. The meeting, he said, will provide the opportunity for the city to have an understanding where there can be collaboration and partnerships.

During the tour, diplomats visited the Industrial Site Day Care Centre, the Meadow Bank sluice, the Stabroek Market Wharf, the City Constabulary Training Complex and the Municipal Abattoir, the Department of Public Information (DPI) reported.

The DPI quoted Narine as saying, “I organised this little tour so that they can see actually what is happening, what the council manages, and how we go about to Chinese Ambassador Cui Jianchun and United Nations Resident Representative Mikiko Tanaka in discussion during the tour. The report also noted that Country Representative of the Organisation of American States (OAS) Jean-Ricot Dormeus said the tour gave members of the international community a better idea of how they can assist.

“It allows us to visit the sites and see how we can collaborate to improve services, to improve systems and have them organised. I believe that will prove helpful to the city,” Dormeus said.

Brazil’ Ambassador to Guyana, Lineu Pupo de Paula, added, “I think we can help. So, after, we are going to have a meeting with the Mayor and see what we can do.”

At the conclusion of the tour, Narine said, “I was able to touch on the major issues and major problems we are facing in the city,” the report added.

Several councillors and officers of the Mayor and City Council, including the acting Town Clerk Sharon Harry-Munroe and Deputy Town Clerk Sherry Jerrick, were also a part of the tour.
