Grade Six Social Studies
Hello Boys and Girls,
Enjoy each day of this new school year. Give of your best in everything you do, learn, have fun and respect your teachers. We are here to help you prepare for a successful year.
How much do you remember about lines of latitude and longitude? Let’s find out.
Answer these questions with True or False. 1. Latitudes and longitudes are parallel lines. _________ 2. Longitude is measured in degrees east and west of the Equator.
_________ 3. Latitude is measured in degrees from the equator towards either of the
poles. _________ 4. The major longitude lines are the Prime Meridian and the International
Date Line. _________ 5. The zero degrees latitude line is the Greenwich Meridian. _________ 6. The Equator is one of the key latitude lines. _________ 7. The International Date Line is the place where each day starts. _________ 8. The Prime Meridian in an imaginary line which divides the earth into
Northern and Southern Hemispheres. _________
The map below has lines of latitude drawn onto it. See what it looks like? The line that is marked zero degrees (0o) separates the north from the south. What is its name? See the line that is marked zero degrees (0o)? It separates the east from the west. What is its name? What is 180 degrees (180o) line called? – a pattern of horizontal and vertical lines that cross over each other to form squares.
The grid looks like the one in the diagram. Every point on the globe is fixed by a north/south degree and an east/west degree. Above the equator is north (N) and below the equator is south (S). While left of the Prime Meridian is west (W) and right of the Prime Meridian is east (E). By means of the grid the position or location of any place on the surface of the earth can be determined. For example the point shown on the globe is 40 degrees North, 30 degrees West (40o N, 30oW). Now, see if you can put in the point 30o N, 60oE on the globe. First, from the centre of the globe go up North 30o from the equator. Then, turn East 60o from the Prime Meridian. Now let’s use lines of latitude and longitude to find locations on the map below. Here are some examples: Location Location
AGis at 75o N, 90o W.
is at 30o S, 0o. Now find these other locations:
