Layne, Nicholas cop TT titles in the US

National junior table tennis player Isaiah Layne enhanced his growing reputation by winning two titles in the United States of America and placing second in another category.

Layne, son of former national football legend, Mikey Layne, and a member of the Titans Table Tennis Club, which is participat­ing at the annual

North American teams TT tournament, copped first place in the Flushing TT Centre November Open and the Westcheste­r Open run by former Caribbean men’s singles champions Sydney Christophe of Guyana and Robert Roberts of Barbados respective­ly.

Layne won the U1800 division at Flushing with two other junior national players, Niran Bissu and Krystian Sahadeo placing second and third respective­ly.

Another junior national player Jamal Nicholas, put aside his basketball skills to win the U2050 category with Layne placing second.

Nicholas also placed second in the tough U2350 category at Flushing.

The players then moved on to the Westcheste­r Open where Layne won the U1750 division while Sahadeo lost in the semifinals in a tough encounter.

Nicholas, whose father is also a competent player, placed third in the U2000 division while Thuraia

Thomas was second in the U1600 category.

Following the conclusion of the North American teams tournament yesterday, the players will participat­e in several other competitio­ns before returning home.

The Titans TT players recently participat­ed in a specially arranged high level training camp conducted by Christian Lillieroos of Texas Weslyan University, USA, prior to their departure for North America.
