Bowlers dominate first day of Banks Beer final round
Bowlers dominated yesterday’s first day of the third and final round of the Berbice Cricket Board (BCB) Banks Beer firstdivision, two-day tournament as Rose Hall Town Thunderbolts and Rose Hall Canje enjoyed first innings points.
At the Area H ground, Albion won the toss and inserted the hosts, Thunderbolts, who were bowled out for 181. Albion responded with 174 all out before Thunderbolts closed their second innings on 13 without loss.
Thunderbolts’ batting centered around former Guyana national player, Delbert Hicks who stroked an entertaining 81, decorated with eight fours and four sixes, all of which were deposited over long off and into the J.C. Chandisingh Secondary School ground.
After an early batting collapse, Hicks forged a 69-run, fourth-wicket partnership with Junior Sinclair who made 32 before David Latchaya pulled off a brilliant return catch to remove him.
Cameos from Keith Simpson (13), Shawn Perreira (12), Kevin Suruj (11) and Eon Hooper (11) aided Thunderbolts’ total but left-arm spinner, Kelvin Umroa halted proceedings with 6 for 54. He was supported by fellow left-arm spinner, Gourav Ramesh with 2 for 21.
In Albion’s first innings, Kandasammy Surujnarine piloted a fightback with a solid 83, decorated with nine fours and one six before top edging to gully.
With Surujnarine and Latchaya (32) looking to build a partnership, Hicks was brought into the attack and he quickly wrapped up the batting line up to finish with 5 for 18. Hooper supported with 3 for 24.
Meanwhile, a late start at Port Mourant saw the hosts being bundled out for 137 compliments of a fiery spell from 21-year-old seamer, Raymond Vankene who picked up 6 for 40 and who was supported by Isai Thorne (2-28).
The 14-year-old Rampertab Ramnauth top scored with 35, laced with five fours and was supported by Madan Budram who made 26.
In reply, Rose Hall Canje established a tworun lead at stumps after reaching 139-9. Rose Hall Canje were indebted to Joel Seetaram who made 43 (two fours and one six) as well as Sasenarine Sukhu (25) and Michael Campbelle (17).
Over at West Berbice, half the day’s play was lost due to moisture on the wicket but when play was possible, Young Warriors Cricket Club bowled out
West Berbice for 185 when stumps was called on the day. Arthley Bailey fell one short of his half century while Leon Andrews made 47.
Kwesi Mickle, Jamal LaFleur and Orlando Tanner picked up two wickets. Play will begin at 9.30 hours to make up for time lost.
In the final match of the round at Cumberland, leftarm spinner, Trevon
Stanislaus, bagged 5 for 25 to bowl out Blairmont for 115 in 41 overs. Stanislaus was aided by Seon Hetmyer who took three wickets. Javed Karim led the way for Blairmont with a seven-boundary 43 while Nigel Deodat chipped in with 25.
At stumps, Young Warriors were 83 for 2 with Carl Gilgeous (17) and Jarron Frank (21) at the crease.
