Alyia Mohabir, the 16year-old girl who was struck along the Bush Lot

Village, Corentyne Public Road on Friday, succumbed to her injuries at the

Georgetown Public Hospital early yesterday morning.

Mohabir, who was transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital late Friday night, succumbed to her injuries around 3 am, while the other two children who were hurt in the accident remained hospitalised in a stable condition at the New Amsterdam Public Hospital.

The teenager, who doctors had pronounced brain dead, also suffered a fractured hip and other serious internal injuries in the accident.

Mohabir’s mother, Bashwati Rambrich, confirmed the passing of her daughter yesterday as she said that her family was heading back to the New

Amsterdam Public Hospital, where her younger daughter, Aneela Mohabir, 14, was still hospitalised and suffering from intense pain.

Despite the intense pain, Aneela, who suffered a fractured right leg, was in a stable condition yesterday.

Relatives said Aneela was asking to see her older sister and that they had told her that she was being kept in another ward since no one wanted to inform the young child of her sister’s death.

Meanwhile, the other injured child, Roshone Mohan, 9, of Bush Lot Village, is also in a stable condition at the New Amsterdam Public Hospital. Her relatives yesterday also related that she, too, was suffering from head and abdominal pain.

The driver of the car that struck the three girls, an

Upper Corentyne doctor, had been taken into custody afterward. The police yesterday said he reported feeling unwell and as a result he was taken from the Whim Police Station to the Port Mourant Public Hospital, where he was admitted under guard.

On Friday when Stabroek News visited the Whim Police Station several doctors and regional health officials were present at the station to offer support to their colleague.

In a statement on Friday evening, the police had said that the accident occurred around 12.15 pm along the Bush Lot Public Road, where the driver was proceeding east along the northern carriageway at a normal rate of speed.

According to the police, the driver alleged that he saw a school child who was standing on the southern side of the road suddenly run into the path of his vehicle, after which he applied brakes and swerved left to avoid a collision. However, he was unsuccessful and ended up on the northern footpath and collided with the other

children, who were walking on the footpath.

Police had said that Alyia Mohabir was picked up in an unconscious condition, while Aneela Mohabir and Mohan were conscious. They were all taken to the Port Mourant Public Hospital, where Mohan remained a patient for observation, while the Mohabirs were later transferred to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital where they were initially admitted.

However, after Alyia failed to regain consciousness, she was then transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital on Friday evening, while Mohan was transferred to the New Amsterdam Hospital on Friday afternoon.

Mohan’s grandmother had told this newspaper that on Friday after eating lunch at her, the girl then decided to head back to school. It was during her journey that she was struck. Meanwhile, Rambrich, the mother of the Mohabirs, had explained that Aneela wanted to purchase a gift for her teacher for Valentine’s Day and Alyia decided that she would accompany her to a nearby shop. They were struck on their way to the shop.
