Corporal succumbs following fireworks explosion: Seon Rose, the army corporal who sustained burns on 90% of his body following a fireworks explosion on Saturday, February 22nd, died last Sunday morning at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH). 21331 Corporal Rose, 31, of Friendship, East Coast Demerara passed away in the Intensive Care Unit at around 11.50 am. Two others: Gordon Cornette of Plaisance, East Coast Demerara and Terrance Neil of Pouderoyen, West Bank Demerara remain patients at the public hospital. Cornette is a patient in the Intensive Care Unit while Neil is a patient at the Burn Care Unit. The five other injured persons: Trevor Joseph, Atto Cort, Victor Low, Delroy Baird and Isaiah Gordon have been discharged from the hospital, a nurse told Stabroek News.

Mahdia driver dies after being accidental­ly shot by cop: A Mahdia, Region Eight driver died on Friday morning after being accidental­ly shot by a police sergeant. Police in the region have launched an investigat­ion after 36-year-old Cleavon Gomes, a driver of 111 Miles Mahdia, received a gunshot wound on Thursday evening to his left shoulder, which subsequent­ly caused his death. The shooting occurred around 8:30 pm in the vicinity of the Number 72 Bus Park, where Gomes had an altercatio­n with a 25-year-old miner at the bus park prior to being shot. It was noted that during the altercatio­n the miner armed himself and was brandishin­g a cutlass at Gomes. In a press release, the force said that the sergeant, who was armed with a service pistol repeatedly warned the miner to desist, however, he continued. The release added that the sergeant then discharged a round in the miner’s direction but Gomes was struck instead. Following the shooting, Gomes was taken to the Mahdia Public Hospital where he succumbed to the injury while receiving medical attention at around 1: 24 am on Friday.

Anna Catherina woman dies after being struck off bike by cop: A 58-year-old pedal cyclist died last Sunday evening after she was struck down by a car driven by a police officer along the Anna Catherina, West Coast Demerara Public Road. Dead is Ramona Hunte, called “Mitzy,” of Lot 160 Anna Catherina, West Coast Demerara, who was pronounced dead on arrival to the West Demerara Regional Hospital. At the time of the accident Hunte was riding her bicycle on the northern side of the public road. She was then struck after a car, bearing licence plate PNN 5547, attempted to overtake another vehicle.

Gary Best charged but still to appear in court over cyclist’s death, lawyer says: Former Chief of Staff of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) Rear Admiral (ret’d) Gary Best has been charged in relation to the February 8th crash that claimed the life of cyclist Jude Bentley but has not yet been arraigned since he was currently “crisscross­ing” the country ahead of the Monday’s General and Regional Elections. This disclosure was made on Friday by attorney James Bond, who told Stabroek News that Best has been charged and is scheduled to appear at the Georgetown Magistrate­s’ Court on Tuesday morning. Best had publicly announced that he would suspend campaign appearance­s after the accident. Bond, however, explained that Best was not campaignin­g and noted that he had responsibi­lities which he has to fulfill since he plays an “integral” role in numerous operations with the A Partnershi­p for National Unity and Alliance for Change (APNU+AFC) coalition.
