After gaining independence from Britain, Guyana introduced the first National Awards under the new system of Honours with two Orders, the Order of
Excellence and the Order of Roraima. This was done on 23rd February, 1970 – the day Guyana gained
Republican status. During the Independence celebrations on May 26, 1970 the awards were presented to distinguished Guyanese for their invaluable service to the nation, at a special ceremony called the investiture. A third Order, the Order of Service was added in 1976.
An investiture is the ceremony at which each person to be honoured is presented to the President who pins the decorations on the persons. These investitures are usually held at the National Cultural Centre.
Now for some details of some National Awards
