Points to remember when writing English Paper 11

1. Read each question carefully and make sure you understand what it is asking for.

What is the subject?

What are you being asked to do with the subject?

Look for key words such as: discuss, explain, give examples, tell a story, and write a letter.

(Underline these words.)

2. Choose a topic which will allow you to give your personal views and experiences. Remember to write frankly but courteously.

3. Your work should be original and interesting as possible. Do not try to memorize a composition/ letter /report which you had done before. Work hard to give your examiners work that they will enjoy reading. 4. Use your time wisely. Make a plan. (Think about the time you will use to write.)

Jot down the ideas as they come to you.

Get the main ideas for each paragraph and list some supporting points.

5. Write the plan in the order you wish to write. Do not make a rough copy because you may not have enough time to rewrite.

6. Edit (read over for mistakes) as you write.

7. Re-read your entire answer. You should use at least five minutes to proofread your work.

8. Check your introduction, controlling sentence, topic sentences, link ing words, punctuation and concluding sentence. Care must be taken to
