THE DICTIONARY

The dictionary is a book which lists in alphabetical order and explains the words of a language. In the English dictionary the following can be found:i. pronunciation ii. syllabication iii. parts of speech iv. etymology v. different meanings of the same word.

Usually, at the front of the dictionary there is a pronunciation guide which would help you to interpret the pronunciation symbols.

Here are some explanations for you.

• Guide words – These are found at the top of the page. They are the first and last words which are defined on that page.

• Special Spelling – This follows the entry of each word to show how to pronounce the word.

• Syllabication – This is indicated by dots between syllables e.g. cut. lass

• Part of Speech – This label follows the pronunciation. e.g. n-noun; (pron.)- pronoun

• Definitions – These follow the part of speech and are numbered if there are several.

• Etymology- This is the word origin and may be shown at the end of an entry e.g. [L] Latin
