Food for the Poor (Guyana), one of the largest Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) in Guyana, on Friday officially handed over five new semi-furnished houses to families residing in the Corentyne area of Region Six.

The five families consist of a total of ten adults and twenty five children and they reside in Port Mourant, Williamsburg, Kilcoy/Chesney, and Albion, on the Corentyne.

Representing the NGO at a simple handing over held at the St Francis Community Developers Headquarters on Friday, Jiya Edwards, a project manager, stated that the organisation was pleased to hand over the five houses to the families. She noted that the structure comprises of two bedrooms, a modern sanitary facility, and a rain-harvesting component.

Additionally, Edwards said that each family would be receiving two beds, four chairs, a table, a table top gas stove and a solar panel unit. “We want to take this opportunity to wish each family much success and we do hope they enjoy homes.”

Edwards also mentioned that the St Francis Community Developers organisation has been assisting with vetting applications in Region Six. Once approved, construction begins immediately.

Meanwhile, Alex Foster, who heads the St Francis Community Developers, in his brief remarks on Friday afternoon thanked Food for the Poor, the contractors, and other persons who their new came on board to assist with the project.

According to Foster, they have built 355 homes for residents of Region Six since the NGO’s General Housing Project started.

He then stated that not only are the families recipient of houses, but they are also working with them “so that they can be empowered so that they can grow.”

Foster posited that if persons’ living conditions are improved then they can place more energy into bettering themselves for the benefit of their families.

He added that it is their hope that if they work to empower parents then those parents will raise children to become productive citizens of Guyana.

To those recipients gathered, Foster urged that they recognise the importance of their children receiving a proper education.
