The desert is a very strange place. The largest desert in South America is called the Patagonian Desert and it is 670,000 square kilometers. It is vast and lonely covered with sand and rock. There are no trees and only a poor kind of grass and some prickly bushes grow on it during certain months. It is hot in the daytime but, strangely enough, it can be cold at nights. The center of the Sahara Desert is very dry with little or no vegetation. It is this great difference in temperature that causes the rocks to crack over and over until at last they crumble and become sand.
The purpose of language is communication. People use language to communicate with themselves- make plans, to keep track of events, to solve problems, to think about ideas and to imagine. Writers must choose their words more carefully than speakers. In addition, you use language to communicate with others- to give and to get information, to exchange ideas, to express feelings and to interact with others. Students must make sure that they organize their work carefully. In either case, whether you are communicating with yourself or with others, it is important that your use of language should express your ideas clearly.
