Guyana Annual launches ‘Folklore edition’

This year’s edition of the Guyana Annual, featuring writing, art and photograph­y from local Guyanese writers, was recently launched and is now on sale.

The Annual hosts annual competitio­ns to discover and promote Guyanese writers and artists and winners are awarded a modest cash prize and have their work is published in magazine’s print and digital platforms.

The Edgar Mittleholz­er Prize for Open Short Story was won by Daryll Goodchild with his story ‘Lucky Stars,’ while the Jan Lowe Shinebourn­e Prize for Junior Short Story was won by Analise Samaroo for her story ‘En Route to America,’ and the Sheila King Prize for Writing Short Story for Children Prize was won by Kathleen ThompsonHe­nriquo with her story ‘ Terror by Night.’

Patrick George won the Mahadai Das Prize for Open Poetry for his poem, ‘Selling pon the pave,’ while Hadiyah Alli won the Wordsworth McAndrew Prize for Junior Poetry for ‘Unwedded Bride.’

Gabrielle Mohamed was awarded the Dr Paloma Mohamed-Martin Prize for Playwritin­g Drama with her work, ‘Spirits of Mountain Crest.’

Robert Teekal won the Stephanie Correia Prize for Open Visual Art, Quanisha Patterson won the George Simon Prize for Junior Visual Art, and Shamar Semple won the Bobby Fernandes Prize for photograph­y. Erania Andrea Daniels was the winner of the Hawley Harris Prize for Cartoon or Graphic short story.

The theme for the 2020 Edition was “Guyanese Folklore” and it was dedicated to writer and ‘cultural enthusiast’ Allan A. Fenty.
