COMPARISON OF ADJECTIVES – PART 1

Adjectives can be used to compare people, animals and things. There are three different forms or degrees of comparison:

◊ Positive

◊ Comparative

◊ Superlative

The positive degree is the basic form of the adjective. It is simply descriptive, and it is the form that is used when no comparison is made.

e.g. Clement is tall.

The comparative degree is used when two nouns or pronouns that have the same quality are compared.

e.g. John is taller

The than Clement.

superlative degree is used to compare three or more nouns or pronouns. e.g. Harry is the tallest.

Rule 1- Some adjectives of one syllable usually form the comparative by adding –er to the positive form and the superlative by adding –est.

e.g. I am kind. Marcia is kinder. Cheryl is the kindest. Other adjectives which follow this rule are bright, few, smooth and young.

Rule 2- A few adjectives form the comparative and superlative by dropping the final –e before adding –er or –est.

e.g. wise wiser wisest Other examples are large, nice, brave, safe and fine.

Rule 3- When an adjective ends with y, this letter is changed to -er or -est. e.g. easy easier

Other examples are healthy, lazy, lucky, noisy, tidy, etc.

ON MY OWN

Read each question carefully then answer the questions which follow.

Some scientists believe that life first began in the sea. This is because millions of plants and animals live in the sea. Some are found in the shallows while others live in the deeper waters of the oceans. Green, brown and red weeds are found around the coasts. Most sea plants float near the surface. They are tiny and can only be seen through a microscope. They serve as food for millions of other small animals that also live near the surface. All these tiny plants and animals are known as plankton. Larger animals like fishes and the whale shark feed on plankton. Octopuses, sharks and strange fishes live in the depths of the ocean. Sharks are among the fastest hunters in the sea.

Molluscs crawl over the sand and rocks. Some are buried in the mud. They get their food from the water they suck in. Along the sea-beds are found star-fish and sea urchins. Corals are very beautiful. They have lovely shapes and live in warm waters. Sometimes, they form reefs which stretch for kilometres. The jelly fish is commonly seen through the water. They open and close like umbrellas. Turtles of various sizes and different kinds spend most of their lives in water. Once a year, they crawl to the land to lay their eggs.

Many mammals live in the sea. Some of them are whales, walruses, seals, dolphins and porpoises. Some birds like penguins and gulls spend part of their lives in the sea. They enjoy wading in the water and feed on fishes.
