Human Services Ministry distributes spectacles to Region Three residents

-

The Ministry of Human Services and Social Security on Saturday distributed 155 pairs of spectacles to residents of Region Three who had their eyes screened and tested during a recent community outreach.

The ministry yesterday said that 170 residents from Tuschen and surrounding communities had accessed the free optical services provided by Modern Optical and Miracle Optical at Tuschen Primary School during the March 20 outreach.

Following up on the outreach, the ministry distributed the spectacles yesterday at the Tuschen Primary, while saying that the beneficiaries were extremely appreciative to Minister Dr. Vindhya Persaud and her team for implementing a service that many of them could not afford on their own.

Persaud, who highlighted the importance of the collaboration with Modern Optical and Miracle Optical, noted that both businesses offered a significant discount for the provision of the spectacles, while the ministry absorbed the remaining cost.

David Singh, Miracle Optical’s General Manager, was quoted as saying that the company was committed to partnering with the ministry on the initiative “for the long haul,” while Shannie Naidoo, of Modern Optical expressed, said her company was pleased to help the residents. She also stated that “from our examinations we found that many residents were suffering from glaucoma, which we treated afterwards at the Georgetown Office, free of cost.”

The statement said the Region Three community outreach was the second one conducted by the ministry in 2021, with the first being held on February 19 at Albion in Region Six, where 67 spectacles were handed out to residents.
