Marics donates $1M for relief

-

Marics and Company Limited on Friday donated $1 million to the Civil Defence Commission (CDC) to aid its flood relief programme.

The $1 million cheque was handed over during a small ceremony at the company’s Charlotte Street showroom.

General Manager, Anand Kalladeen told members of the press that Marics & Company Ltd empathises with the residents who have been affected by the recent flooding and was moved to make a donation to assist the efforts by the CDC.

Receiving the donation was Deputy Director General of the CDC Major Loring Benons, who expressed gratitude for the timely donation, which he said continues to show the support of corporate Guyana towards flood relief efforts.

Meanwhile, on the sidelines of the handing over, Major Benons told reporters that the CDC continues to organise and pack items, such as cots for the shelters and food items to be deployed to the various regions. According to the Deputy Director General, the commission has so far seen lots of international donors coming on board.

He revealed that a shipment from the United States with a number of cots was expected to arrive on Friday and the authorities should be able to clear them soon. “Currently we have a lot of support coming from the international donors and organisations,” he mentioned.

Major Benons noted that some areas are still heavily inundated with water even as water continues to rise in other areas. However, he added that teams are currently

out in the field conducting assessments and will then submit comprehensive reports as it relates to the effects of the flooding.
