Order in a Paragraph

- Order is achieved in the paragraph when supporting sentences move the details easily from one point to the next without backtracking or wandering. Therefore, for a writer to achieve order, all the sentences must tell us something about the topic sentence.

- A good paragraph must have order. In good paragraphs, sentences are arranged in logical order. However, there is no one order for every paragraph.

- A paragraph may be ordered according to:

• number

• time

• importance

-A paragraph that is arranged in a sensible order has a beginning, middle and an ending. Beginning: Encourages interest

States the main idea (using one key word)

Suggests what is coming next

Middle: Has one or more details that support the main idea.

Ending: Has one or more details that sum up all the other details.

Restate the main idea.

A) Read as many paragraphs as possible from your reader.

B) Use the notes above to explain how each paragraph has been ordered.

Rice is the staple diet for most Guyanese. In addition to this grain, families add vegetables to make a balanced diet. In many homes, rice is the greatest portion at the lunch table. Rice is usually given to toddlers because they tolerate it at an early age. Rice has become very much a part of our Guyanese cuisine. Also, rice forms part of our desserts and drinks.
