Hello Boys and Girls!
I know you had a wonderful Easter break, and you were able to get some relaxation and recreation.
As you know we are closer to the National Grade Six Assessment (NGSA) which means you must be very committed to your academic studies, that is the only way you would be successful. I am very confident that you will dedicate yourself fully because you understand the importance of education.
In our last lesson we started looking at Guyana’s Neighbours. We looked specifically at Guyana’s Continental Neighbours. We discussed that a neighbour is a person who lives next door or nearby. Guyana’s neighbours are not only countries which are nearby, but those countries with which it shares certain relationships are also considered as neighbours. Guyana has
THREE Continental Neighbours namely:
- 1)Brazil
- 2) Suriname and
- 3) Venezuela.
Today we continue to explore Guyana’s neighbours. We are going to conclude our lesson on Continental Neighbours and begin our new lesson on Guyana’s Caribbean Neighbours.

Some Facts About Guyana’s Other Continental Neighbours
Guyana has nine other continental neighbours. These are all countries that can be found on the continent of South America.
Fact/Tip: Guyana is the only English-speaking country in South America
Guyana’s Caribbean neighbours are those countries which are in and around the Caribbean Sea.
These countries or islands also share certain relationships with Guyana.
Most of these islands were once colonies of Britain but some also belonged to France, Spain and the Netherlands.
The Caribbean islands are divided into three main groups namely: 1) The Greater Antilles 2) The Commonwealth of the Bahamas and 3) The Lesser Antilles 1Map of The Caribbean
Vocabulary Building: The Greater Antilles is a grouping of the larger islands in the Caribbean Sea.
The Greater Antilles consists of the larger islands.
- Cuba
- Haiti
- The Dominican Republic - Jamaica
- Puerto Rico
- The Bahamas
- The Turks and Caicos Islands - The Cayman Islands
- The US Virgin Islands
- The Bahamas
Fact/Tip: The Bahamas consist of over 3000 individual islands and over 700 coves.

What is considered a cove?
A cove is a type of small, sheltered bay on the coast of an ocean, lake, or river. Sometimes, coves are smaller inlets of larger bays or lagoons.
Vocabulary Building: The Lesser Antilles are a group of islands in the Caribbean Sea. Most of them are part of a long, partially volcanic island arc between the Greater Antilles to the north-west and the continent of South America.
The Lesser Antilles consist of: - the Leeward Islands
- the Windward Islands
FACT/TIP: The chain of islands in the Eastern Caribbean are known as the Leeward and Windward Islands.
