Cyclists to be rewarded with record sums

The 40th edition of the National Sports Commission (NSC) Independen­ce Three-Stage road race is set to reward with record sums to the riders finishing with the top honors.

According to the Guyana Cycling News’ Facebook page, the male overall winner of this weekend’s, 165-mile event is set to pocket $150,000 with $110,000 and $80,000 going to the other podium dwellers.

The sum of $60,000, $50,000 and $35,000 will go to the fourth, fifth and sixth place overall finishers.

Further, the respective category winners will also take home a tidy sum: $60,000 (juniors), $50,000 (veterans 40-45), $50,000 (veterans over 45), $35,000 (ladies) and $20,000 (juveniles)

The first place finisher for each stage will also ride off with $10,000 incentive. Twenty-five sprint prizes, valued at $2500 each will also be up for grabs during the fixture. In total, almost $1M will be rewarded to the riders.

On Saturday, the grueling road race gets underway from Corriverto­n to New Amsterdam from 07:30hrs.

The second stage, also on Saturday, will pedal off at 2:00 pm from Rosignol to Georgetown for the finish at Carifesta Avenue.

On Sunday, the third and final stage will commence from Kara Kara, Linden (from 7:30 am) to Homestretc­h Avenue.

Last year, Akil Campbell of Trinidad and Tobago, was declared the winner of the coveted award for the 39th edition of the prestigiou­s event in 7h: 18m.19s.

Jamual John placed second overall in 7:22.32 while Team Evolution’s Curtis Dey placed third overall in 7:28.36.

Kemuel Moses (7:26.50), Jason Cameron (7:32.51) and David Hicks (7:32.54) filled out the top six overall rewarding positions.
