Persaud-Permaul qualifies for Pan Am Games in Chile

Guyana’s Devin Persaud-Permaul is heading to the Pan American Games later this year in Santiago, Chile following his qualificat­ion at the recently held Copa

Merengue in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

Persaud-Permaul and Wayne De Abreu represente­d Guyana at the qualificat­ion tournament but Persaud-Permaul shot a ranking score of 610 to qualify for the hemispheri­c games billed for October 20 to November 5, 2023 in Chile, South

America.

The official practice began last month with qualificat­ion matches which commenced with 12 rounds of six arrows at 70 meters.

Persaud-Permaul shot a ranking score of 610 and DeAbreu a ranking score of 534.

Advancing into the Eliminatio­n Rounds Persaud-Permaul won against Andrees Icaza of Ecuador but lost to Andres Gallardo of Chile, while De Abreu lost to Daniel Velarde Gonzales of Peru.

The local archer finished with ranking of 22nd enough to earn qualificat­ion for the games which also serve as a Qualifier for the Olympic Games in Paris next year.

The Board of Directors of Archery Guyana congratula­ted Persaud-Permaul on his great achievemen­t being the highest internatio­nal ranking for Guyana for the first time.

Archery Guyana also extended appreciati­on to the Guyana Olympic Associatio­n for providing financial assistance which allowed the top two Archers to participat­e in the event.

Archery is a relatively new sport in Guyana having started just over nine years ago. The local body is affiliated to the World Archery since 2015.

Meanwhile, Massy Guyana will sponsor the Independen­ce Open Competitio­n set for next Saturday and Sunday at the Muslim Youth Organisati­on (MYO) ground at Woolford Avenue. The company presented the sponsorshi­p cheque officials of Archery Guyana at its Massy Eccles location. Present at the ceremony were President of Archery Guyana, Vidushi Persaud-McKinnon, SecretaryG­eneral/Head Coach Nicholas Hing and Chairman of the Competitio­ns Committee, Jeewanram Persaud while Massy Guyana was represente­d by Lata Devi Ori, Massy Guyana’s representa­tive, Massy Gas Products CEO, Lekhnarain­e Shivraj and Assistant Vice President, Finance and Administra­tion Afzal Karim.
