Sentence Fragments

A fragment is only a part of a sentence.

A sentence fragment is a line of words that does not express complete thought or idea.

e.g., my classmate who is sick was called to the office

How do you improve sentence fragments?

There are three basic ways to improve sentence fragments.

Method I (Attachment) – Attach the sentence fragment before or after another sentence.

(Be careful when you use this method. It may change the meaning of the words.)

Exercise

I called my classmate who is sick.

Method II (Add on) – Add a subject, verb, or both to make the thought complete.

Charles was called to the office.

Method III (Detach) – Take away the word or phrase that makes the line of words a sentence fragment.

(Because) The iron is hot.

ON MY OWN

Read each line of words carefully. Write sentence.

Rewrite each fragment as a complete sentence. 1. Carried my bookbag 2. The kind woman 3. My pet sleeps on the mat. 4. Because we were tired 5. My family went to the beach. 6. Sat on the carpet (F) if it is a fragment and (S) if it is a

COMPOSITION

WITH MY CLASSMATES

- Read and discuss the notes.

The Expository Composition- Explaining Directions to a Place Specific instructions

Giving directions to a place is not always very simple . You need to use precise language —important words, phrases and sentences e.g.

“Turn right/left.”

“Look for the sign at the crossroads then turn right.”

“After 100 kilometres , follow the sign into the main driveway.”

“Take the first turning / road / street on your left / right.”

“You’ll see / You’ll come to a (bank). Then …”

“Don’t take the first road.”

Landmarks

We often refer to landmarks when we give directions to help the other person. These can be places in a town, such as cinema, bank, bus stop, etc. They can also be parts of the road system. Here are some common terms: pedestrian crossing, crossroads,/cross-section.

Use Prepositions

Go past = continue past something so that it is now behind you Go across = cross something, like a road or crossroads

Go along = continue down a road

Go straight on = don’t turn left or right

Go up = walk / drive up a hill

Go down = walk or drive down a hill or a road (english-at-home.com)

ON MY OWN

In about 120-150 words, write a composition on one of the following:

A) Explain to your friend how to get from school to the park.

B) Explain to your cousin how to walk from her home to the market.

C) Explain to your new neighbour how to find the nearest shop in your community.

COMPREHENSION

ON MY OWN

Read the passage carefully then answer the questions which follow.

Terrorism

There is much more terrorist activity nowadays than ten years ago. Incidents of terrorism usually depend on the intent or goals of the terrorists. Very often the terrorists set out to inject fear into the minds of their opponents, and to destroy them, sometimes along with innocent people.

Terrorists use suicide bombers, vehicles and boats with explosives, special armies to train and eradicate their enemies. One of the most publicized attacks has been labelled “the 9/11 attack”. Terrorists hijacked American planes into the World Trade Center.
