Smith, Holder win 100m events at AAG senior national C/ships

The curtain will come down on the Athletics Associatio­n of Guyana (AAG) senior championsh­ips today at the National Track and Field Centre in Edinburgh, West Demerara with the 200m for men and women among the day’s feature events.

Also on today will be the men and women 400 and 800m.

The championsh­ips, which commenced Friday afternoon, continued yesterday morning from 10am and among the winners on show was Anthony Williams of the Police Progressiv­e Youth Club who won the men’s long jump event with a leap of 7.26m Second was Eron Leitch with 7.05m while Nichol Crandon of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) was third with 6.90m.

Annali Redmond clinched the female long jump event with a leap of 5.46m. Tasnica Lovell (5.00m) and Tonya Rawlins (4.54m) were second and third respective­ly. The Guyana Defence Force athletes swept the podium in the discus event with Ameka Eastman 34.8m; Tanisha Cort (34.6m) and Jameicia Scott (32.44m), the top three finishers.

The GDF was again to the fore in the men’s discus event where Jemaine Simmons won with a throw of 43.11m, while Joshua Jones (40.3m) and Police’s Kleon Spellen (37.4m) were second and third respective­ly. On Friday’s opening day, Keliza Smith and Nolex Holder won the marquee 100m female and male events respective­ly.

Smith clocked 11.66s to defeat Cassy Small (11.93s) and Tianna Springer, 13.04s while Holder triumphed in 10.36s.

Akeem Stewart (10.68s) and Shamar Horatio 10.42s were second and third respective­ly. Marlon Nicholson won the men’s 10,000m, in 35 minutes and 52.25s from Cleveland Thomas (37:02.93) and Odida Parkison (37:36.97) while Jelicia Wright won the women’s 5000m in 22 minutes and 40.6 seconds.

Sheama Tyrell (23.22.5) and Kezra Murray (24.12.7) were second and third respective­ly.
