The Descriptive Paragraph- Part 2- Using the Five Senses in your Writing .

Smell

Smell is another one of those senses that’s different for each of us. What I think is an unpleasant smell, someone else might not be bothered by it. So, words like stink and pungent are great to use, but you can easily go deeper into explanation. For example, “The alley smelled of urine mixed with rotten onions, an assault to the nose and eyes alike.

Some words which can be used to describe smell are sweet, fresh, rotten, flowery, fruity, grassy, stale, peppery and light.

Taste

Taste is something that is different to each of us and may be difficult to get across in writing. If you think about it, taste is more than just something your brain interprets from your tastebuds. It’s texture, smell, and sight and even process, all mixed together. For example, “The undercooked bacon felt likea wet sponge placed on my tongue, only grease leaked into my mouth instead of water.” Or this: “I could smell the mould even before I put the cheese into my mouth.” Of course, you can always use a metaphor or simile, like, “Like hot cocoa on a rainy morning, the dinner calmed and relaxed me.”

Some words which may be used to describe taste are sweet, sour, bitter, strong, cheesy, fruity, burnt, buttery and spicy.

Sometimes, the senses overlap to a point, so we often put them together as a way of explaining just one of them. That might be the best way to approach this subject after all, since writing is personal and we each have our way to do it.

ON MY OWN

In about 120-200 words , write a descriptive composition on “A Visit to the Market in my Community.”

COMPREHENSION ON MY OWN

Read the passage carefully then answer the questions which follow.

The leatherback sea turtle sometimes called lute turtle is the largest of all living turtles and is the fourth largest modern reptile. It is different from other modern sea turtles because it lacks the bony shell. Instead of the carapace, it is covered by skin and oily flesh.

Leatherbacks have a large tear- drop shaped body. A large pair of flattened front flippers powers the turtles through the water. Claws are absent from both pairs of flippers. The front flippers can grow up to 2.7 metres in large specimens.

Instead of teeth, the leatherback turtle has points on the sharp cutting edge of its upper lip with backwards spine in its throat. This helps it to swallow food and to stop its prey escaping once caught. The teeth are not used to chew the food. The jaws would be damaged by anything other than a diet of soft bodied animals, so they feed exclusively on jellyfish.

The entire body is covered with dark grey to black with white blotches and spots.

Its underside is lightly coloured.

In Guyana, leatherback turtles are popular on Shell Beach, located in the Northwestern Region of the country. They come out on the beach to lay their eggs. These reptiles usually arrive under the cover of darkness from March to August every year.

People are encouraged not to harm the endangered species. The leatherback turtle is one of the strangest reptiles that we should preserve.
