Hello boys and girls, I trust that you are having an awesome day so far! Welcome back to our Math corner. Last week we began looking at the basic concept of decimals. Today, we will continue to focus on decimals where we will be examining the simple concept of addition and subtraction of same. I urge you to read all concepts, instructions, and problems carefully. Let’s begin.

Addition and Subtraction of Decimals

When adding or subtracting with decimals we can use the column method as we do with typical whole numbers. However, note should be taken to ensure that the decimal points line up with each other.

Let us examine two examples below:

Example 1: Calculate the sum of 23.51 + 14.32.

23.51 +14.32

37.83

Example 2: Calculate the difference of 653.4 – 543.2

653.4 -543.2

110.2

With both examples above, we can clearly see that the digits are lined up correctly under each other, likewise the decimal points.

Here is your opportunity to work independently!

Exercise 1

Read the scenarios carefully and solve the word problems below:

1. 2.

Albert is 13.5 years old. If he is 3.5 years older than his brother James, how old is James?

a) How much taller is Linda than

Estrella? b) How much taller is Estrella than

Sofia? Matt swims three days a week and rests the other four days. On Monday, he swam a total of 2.4 miles. On Tuesday, he By Stayon Abrams swam 2.63 miles. On Wednesday, he swam 3.11 miles. How much did Matt swim altogether that week?
