Tournament favourite Gulf Warriors edge Triumph 2-1

-

Gulf Warriors and Republic Drive recorded contrasting wins when the 2023 edition of the Beterverwagting (BV) Inter-Block Football Championship resumed on Friday evening at the Community Center ground.

Tournament favorite Gulf Warriors overcame traditional giant Triumph 2-1 in a bruising affair. Tyrice Dennis opened the scoring for the Gulf Warriors as he etched his name on the scorer’s sheet in the 25th minute.

It was an opportunistic conversion from the emerging forward who pounced on a loose ball inside the box after the defender had lost his footing before blasting his effort into the back of the net.

The lead was short-lived as Triumph equalized one minute later in a similar fashion. A defensive error once again led to the conversion, as the left-back lost possession, which allowed the onrushing forward to pounce on the loose ball and rifle his right-footed effort into the back of the net from inside the area.

The score remained unchanged heading into the halftime interval. The result would eventually be decided in the penultimate minute of regulation time when Malachi Grannum recorded the winner for Gulf Warriors.

Dennis was the architect of the conversion, as he unleashed a lobbed pass to Grannum, who controlled the ball before rounding the advancing goalkeeper inside the penalty area and finishing into the back of the empty net.

Meanwhile, Republic Drive blanked Housing Scheme 3-0. Stephon McDonald recorded a first-half brace in the 34th and 43rd minute while Dorwin George found the back of the net in the 78th minute.
