Harpy Eagles romps to seven-wicket win over Jamaica Scorpions
Guyana Harpy Eagles recorded a vital sevenwicket win over Jamaica Scorpions yesterday at the Brian Lara Cricket
Academy to keep their hopes of advancing in the CG United Regional Super50 alive.
With rain reducing the contest to a 48-over match, Scorpions won the toss and decided to take first strike, posting 181 all out in 46.5 overs. Eagles, who were set a target of 184 by the Duckworth/Lewis and Stern method, reached their target in 39 overs for the loss of three wickets. This win meant that Scorpions, who are the reigning champions, ended their campaign without a win.
Guyana’s batting was led by Tagenarine Chanderpaul who worked his way up to 77 from 110 balls. His eight-boundary innings was a career-best performance at this level and marked the third occasion the left-hander had crossed the half-century milestone, eclipsing his previous best of 64.
Chanderpaul built a strong foundation for the team’s chase with newly minted skipper, Tevin Imlach, the duo sharing in
an 86-run stand for the second-wicket. Imlach contributed 30 from 57 balls and showed his temperament with a solitary boundary.
After Imlach’s dismissal, Chanderpaul would partner Shimron Hetmyer to pile on 63 runs for the third wicket. Hetmyer, much like Chanderpaul, has struggled throughout the tournament but turned things around when it mattered most for his side and finished on 62 not out, an innings laced with two sixes and five fours.
Earlier, Scorpions’ batting dilemma continued once again with the highlight being a 53-run stand
between Rovman Powell and Andre McCarthy. Powell made 33 while McCarthy made 23. Brad Barnes top scored with 36, hitting two sixes before being bowled by Nial Smith.
Cameos also came from Chadwick Walton (26), Nkrumah Bonner (20), Odean Smith (20) and Shalome Parnell (13 not out) who also took two wickets.
Smith and Kevin Sinclair picked up three wickets each for 26 and 48 runs respectively while Sherfane Rutheford and former captain, Veerasammy Permaul took two wickets each.
