FACT AND OPINION

Recognizing the difference between fact and opinion will be very useful in your composition and comprehension lessons. So, you should try to get practice to master this skill. Here are some useful hints.

Fact - A fact is information that is true and can be proven.

A fact is determined when we get evidence from reference sources e.g. encyclopedias atlases ,reliable books and Websites.

E.g. There are thirty days in November.

Opinion- An opinion is information that tells how someone feels or what he or she thinks. about someone or something and may not be true.

It is a statement that expresses a person’s judgment or belief but cannot be proven.

E.g., Keeping pets in homes is untidy.

To recognize statements of opinion, you should look for clue words or phrases such as best, worst, most , least and I think.

1. The residents of Lethem are very kind. 2. The parents spoke eloquently at the meeting. 3. The next leap year is 2024. 4. Air is a mixture of gases. 5. Most children sleep after eating a meal.

COMPREHENSION ON MY OWN

Read the passage carefully then answer the questions which follow.

The water cycle is one of the essential life cycles that take place on earth. The cycle consists of three phrases: evaporation, condensation and precipitation. Evaporation occurs when heat from the sun changes ocean water and some water from other sources into water vapour. Condensation follows when water vapour turns into water droplets which form clouds. Precipitation occurs when the droplets become too heavy and water falls as rain, snow, sleet or hail.

Humans and other animal organisms need oxygen to survive. Plants give off oxygen. An appropriate balance between plant photosynthesis and animal respiration ensures that enough oxygen is available.

Carbon is used by all living things. Plants need carbon dioxide for photosynthesis. Animals get carbon dioxide from the plant and animal tissues they eat. They exhale carbon dioxide as a by-product of respiration.

Questions

Read each question carefully then draw a heavy black line through the letter (A, B, C or D) which is near the answer you choose.

2.The passage states that all of these are different forms of precipitation except
