-

After a dream start on Friday in Paramaribo, Suriname, Team Guyana’s dominance on the track continued yesterday at the InterGuiana Games (IGG), as Tianna Springer, Ezekiel Newton, and Javon Roberts recorded gold medal performances.

Sprint queen Springer found herself atop the podium in the Girls 200m, as did rising star Newton, who showed his prowess to seal the sprint double, the 100m and 200m, in Paramaribo.

Middle distance athlete Roberts also had another stellar outing, this time clinching the 800m boys gold medal to add to his 1500m gold exploits on Friday.

Meanwhile, in the pool, the Guyanese swimmers had a decent outing, with Elliot Gonsalves clinching gold in the 200-metre boy’s individual medley. He clocked a time of 2 minutes, 17.97 seconds to stand on top of the podium.

Zara Crane had commendable swims to cop a bronze and a silver in her events. She took part in the girl’s 200-metre individual medley and secured silver in 2 minutes 54.34 seconds, behind Surinamese Amazya Macroy, who took gold in 2 minutes 40.61 seconds. The latter’s teammate, Elya Powdar, settled for bronze in 2 minutes, 57.87 seconds.

Crane took her bronze in the girls 100-metre breaststroke behind Muglisha Dipokarto of Suriname, who took gold, and Kayliah Valerius of French Guiana, who took copper silver.

Gonsalves also distinguished himself in the boys 100-metre breaststroke with a silver medal effort, behind Suriname’s Hassan Holtuin, who copped gold. Another Surinamese, Shamaro McDonald, settled for bronze.

On the football pitch, Guyana’s female team suffered a 9-1 drubbing at the mercy of Suriname. The games will continue today, with Guyana hoping to close off strongly in all disciplines.
