Answers to last week’s exercise

Hello, students! Welcome to our weekly Mathematics Corner. I hope you all are doing fine! In this week’s session, we will be examining the concept of calculating the average of data sets, also known as the mean. Without any more delay, let’s get started!

Average

In mathematics, the average is a measure that represents the central tendency of a set of values. It is also known as the arithmetic mean.

The arithmetic mean is calculated by adding up all the values in a set and then dividing the sum by the number of values. The formula for the arithmetic mean (average) is:

Average= Sum of values Number of values

Here’s a step-by-step explanation of how to find the average:

Add up all the values: Sum all the numbers in the set.

Count the number of values: the set.

Determine how many numbers are in

Divide the sum by the number of values: Divide the sum obtained in step 1 by the number of values obtained in step 2.

Let’s examine two examples:

Example 1

Suppose you have the following set of numbers: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10.

Add up all the values: 2+4+6+8+10=30

Count the number of values: There are 5 values in the set.

Divide the sum by the number of values: Average = 30 ÷ 5 = 6. So, the average of the set {2, 4, 6, 8, 10} is 6.

Example 2

Suppose you have the following grades for a student in four different subjects:

85, 90, 78, and 92.

Step 1: Add up all the grades. 85+90+78+92 = 345

Step 2: Count the number of grades. There are 4 grades.

Step 3: Calculate the average. Average= 345 ÷ 4 = 86.25

So, the average grade for the student is 86.25.

Now, boys and girls, it’s your time to work!

Complete the exercises below:

Exercise 1
