CM Khan captures Senior National Chess crown, after playoff win

Candidate Master (CM) Taffin Khan (2005) emerged champion of the Senior National Chess Championsh­ip after defeating Loris Nathoo (1703) in a closely fought playoff encounter at the Ocean Spray Hotel in Kitty, Georgetown.

The first and third game produced stalemates, whilst Khan won the second encounter which proved to be vital as he captured the title. With the win, CM Khan claimed his fifth title

The playoff was necessitat­ed after both players ended their encounters in the National Open with nine opponents atop the standings on 7.5 points.

In the playoff, they were required to play three games of Speed Chess, with a total playing time of one hour. Each contender was allotted 15, 10 and five minutes on the clock from the first to the third games, under the watchful eyes of Tournament Arbiter John Lee.

Young Hetmyer records his second double hundred in U-15 cricket

Adrian Hetmyer, the nephew of Guyana and West Indies batsman Shimron Hetmyer, recorded a whirlwind and undefeated 260 from 164 balls for home side Rose Hall Canje against Betsy Ground in an u15 match.

Hetmyer recorded twentyfour fours and nine sixes as his team recorded a massive 485-2 in their 50 overs. Hetmyer was supported by Lakeram Singh, who also scored 111 runs off 90 balls (11x4s, 2x6s), while Richard Ramdeholl scored 40.

In response, Betsy Ground was dismissed for a meagre 59 in 16 overs to hand the home side a massive 426-run victory. Renee Ishmael topscored with 13 runs. Bowling for the home side, Ramdeholl snared 3-3, while Aarush Hemraj recorded figures of 37 and Gautam Dhanraj recorded 3-15.
