AAG's season underway, 2nd developmental meet slated for today
The Athletics Association of Guyana's (AAG) season is underway and the second of many scheduled developmental meets will run off today at the National Track and Field Centre (NTFC) at Edinburgh on the West Coast of Demerara.
Vice-President of the AAG, Nial Stanton told Stabroek Sport that the first quarter of 2024 has been earmarked by the association for intense competitions aimed at preparing the cream of the crop of young athletes for the upcoming international competitions, Carifta Games included.
Almost every Sunday will see these developmental meets run off albeit not at the full distances of the various track events.
Last Sunday (January 7) saw the first developmental meet targeting the distance athletes with a cross country style competition.
In the Males 20+ 8K race, Cleveland Thomas crossed the finish line in 29 minutes 26.1 seconds to get his year off to a winning start while Odwin Tudor and youngster Odida Parkinson placed second and third in that order.
In the same age category, albeit the females 6k race, Delicia Innis took top honours in 36 minutes 19.3 seconds and was followed by Analissa Redmond and Atavia Johnson in second and third respectively.
Jomal Sullivan (19' 36'') copped first place in the Males U-20 4k event ahead of Samuel Booker and Jonathan Harris who occupied the other two podium spots in that order.
On the distaff side of the same distance race, Ester Harvey reigned supreme with a time of 26 minutes 56.2 seconds while Talleisha James and Amelia Dover settled for second and third.
In the U-18 Boys 3k, multi-sport athlete Ebo McNeil shone brightly in a commanding win, stopping the clock at 10 minutes 38.1 seconds ahead of second placed Cort Anthony and third placed Janthan Bristol.
Ester McKinnon (12' 24.4'') won over the same distance in the Girls U-18 event ahead of Danell Frasey (2nd) and Kaymara Lacon (3rd).
Today's meet gets underway at 9 am.
