The Collective Noun

The collective noun names a set or group of people, animal or things e.g. a flight of steps a swarm of bees

Subject- Verb Agreement of Collective Nouns

Collective nouns are nearly always treated as singular. They emphasize the group as a unit.

A batch of bread was delivered to the orphanage.

Occasional­ly, when the members of the team or group are regarded as individual­s, a collective noun may be treated as plural.

After each performanc­e, the company greet the audience.

When the subject of a sentence is the title of something like a book, a story, a magazine, a play, a movie or a song, it is regarded as singular (unless if more than one thing is being discussed.)

The Three Little Pigs is a popular nursery rhyme.

- Names of single companies, organizati­ons and countries are also considered singular, even though they sometimes look plural.

COURTS is one of the popular furniture stores in Guyana.

LETTER OF APOLOGY

A letter of apology may be a personal letter that explains why the writer was unable to do something he or she had agreed to do.

When writing such a letter, you should do the following:

Paragraph 1[Express remorse.] Start by specifical­ly stating that for which you are apologizin­g. Briefly describe what you did and express regret for not being able to do what you had agreed to.

Paragraph 2 [Take responsibi­lity.] Clearly indicate that you are taking responsibi­lity for your actions, as described above. Do not make excuses; instead, make it clear that you own your role in the situation. Explain the reasons and, if necessary, apologize.

Paragraph 3[Make amends.] Offer a way to make things right. If appropriat­e, express the hope that the reader will understand and may forgive you. Depending on the situation, you may offer to do something else of importance for the recipient.

Paragraph 4[End politely] End with a personal, friendly message for the reader. Include a statement designed to help the recipient understand that you will not make the same mistake again in the future.
