Answers to last week’s exercise Exercise 1

Hello, boys and girls! Welcome back to our weekly Mathematics Corner. I hope you all had an excellent week at school. In our previous session, we delved into the world of length measurements, specifically converting millimeters to centimeters and vice versa. This week, we will continue our exploration by focusing on the conversion between kilometers and meters, as well as meters to kilometers. Let’s dive right in:

Kilometer and Meter

Example 2

Express 13km as meters. We multiply 13 x 1000 We get= 13000m

Exercise 2

a. 7.5cm b. 2.2cm c. 2.4cm d. 4.5cm e. 9.8cm f. 7cm

Firstly, I want you to take a minute or two to review the metric ladder we discussed last week.

Converting kilometers to meters

To convert kilometers to meters, we multiply the number of kilometers by 1000 (use metric ladder as a guide).

Hence: 1 km= 1000 m

Let us apply this to an example.

Example 1

Express 53.82 kilometers as meters. We know that 1km= 1000m

Therefore, we multiply 53.82 km by 1000 We get: 53.82 x 1000= 53,820 m

It’s that simple!

Boys and girls, it’s your time to work!

Complete the exercise below:

Exercise 1

Convert the following measurements from kilometer to meter: a) 25 km= _____m b) 35.342 km= ______m c) 171 km= ____m d) 97 km= ______m e) 90.9 km= _____m f) 313 km= _____ m g) 614.03 km= _____ m h) 90 km= _____ m i) 75.3 km= ______m j) 78.90 km= _____m

Good job, students!

Now, boys and girls, we will convert meters to kilometers:

Converting meters to kilometers is a straightforward process. By reviewing the metric ladder, it becomes evident that a convenient method for converting meters to kilometers involves dividing the meter value by 1000.

Km= _m_ 1000

Example

Convert 7000 m to km. We know that Km= _m_

1000

Therefore= _7000_ = 7km 1000

Cautiously work the following exercise:

Convert each measurement from meters to kilometers. a) b) c) d) 81000m _______km e) 27m _______km f) 456000m _______km g) 7m _______km h) 5600 m _____km 87m _______km 923m ______km 52m _______km i) 86300m _______km

That concludes today’s session, everyone. Look forward to the solutions to this week’s problem when you return next week. In our upcoming session, we’ll delve deeper into the topic of measurement, specifically concentrating on the conversion of weights.

Wishing you all a wonderful week ahead!
