The Low Coastal Plain has lots of beautiful and important places that you can visit. If you live on the Low Coastal Plain I am quite sure you would have visited some of these places. If you have never visited here are a few important places to learn about.

Some important places on the Coastal Plain:

Did you know? Five of Guyana's townships are located here. They are:

1. Georgetown 2. Anna Regina 3. New Amsterdam 4. Rose Hall 5. Corriverton

FACT: Georgetown is the Capital of Guyana

• The Tapakuma Irrigation project is on the Essequibo Coast. • The chief lakes of our country are also situated on the Coastlands in the

county of Essequibo. Some of these lakes are:

• The Tapakuma- situated South West of Anna Regina.

• The Quakabuka or Mainstay lake - a few hundred metres off Tapakuma. • Capoey Lake and Ituribisci Lake - about 12 miles (19.2 km) south of

Mainstay

The Agricultural Project

The Mahaica Mahaicony Abary, Agricultural Development Authority. (MMA/ADA)

FACT! The main economic activity on the Coastal Plain is Agriculture.

Boys and girls it is very important to note that the Low Coastal Plain is below sea level and coastal communities are vulnerable. With climate change causing higher sea water levels, the country has been facing increasingly frequent coastal flooding events.

Let’s examine what happens when there is flooding:

Flooding can harm the lives of people living in this region.

• Flooding can destroy crops, cause loss of livestock, and cause people to get water-borne diseases.

Flooding can result in a loss of income for farmers and a shortage of food for the people in the country.

What do you think needs to be done to prevent flooding? To prevent floods, there must be proper drainage.

Today we looked extensively at the Low Coastal Plain. Let’s remember that the Low Coastal Plain is a flat, narrow strip of land which stretches from Point Playa To the Corentyne River. The soil and climate, together with the flat land, provide the necessity for agriculture. It is home to the vast majority of the population and is interrupted by several major rivers.

Hope you enjoyed learning about our Low Coastal Plain. Next week we will learn about another Natural Region: The Hilly Sand and Clay Region.

Until next time, stay safe, boys and girls!
