Grade Six Science
Example 2
Change 7.3kg to grams.
Since you are multiplying a decimal by 1000, shift the point three places to the right.
Hence: 7.3 x 1000= 7300g
Exercise 3
Convert the following measurements to grams: a) 21 kg = ________ g b) 18 kg = _______g c) 45.6 kg = _________g d) 5.5 kg = _______g e) 34.874 kg = _________g ` f) 73 kg = _______g g) 6 kg = ________g h) 90kg = _______g
Great job, boys and girls!
From 2B
Now, let’s switch things around. Were you aware that it’s possible to convert from a smaller unit to a larger one? Absolutely!
When converting from a smaller unit to a larger one, we divide.
Converting milligrams to grams Formula: 1000mg = 1g
Example 1: Change 4000 milligrams to grams. Since 1000mg = 1g, divide by 1000
Therefore: 4000 ÷ 1000 =4g
Example 2: Change 7500 mg to g.
Since you are dividing by 1000, shift the point three places to the left. 7500 ÷ 1000= 7.5 g
Exercise 4
Convert the following to grams: a) 6000 mg ______g b) 3870 mg ______g c) 5000mg ______g d) 9610 mg ______g e) 6787 mg ______g f) 300 mg ______g
Good job, boys and girls!
Let us now examine how to convert grams to kilograms!
Converting grams to kilograms 1000g= 1kg
Example 1- Convert 5000 grams to kilograms. Since 1000g = 1kg, divide by 1000
Therefore: 5000 ÷ 1000 =5kg
Example 2- Convert 430g to kg
Since you are dividing by 1000, shift the point three places to the left. 430 ÷ 1000 = 0.43 kg
As our final task, let us complete the following exercise:
Exercise 5
Convert the following to kilograms. a. 7000g ________kg b. 1900g _______kg c. 2200g ________kg d. 8000g _______kg e. 6500 _________kg f. 350g _______kg
Today’s session concludes, boys and girls. Check back next week to find solutions to this week’s problems. Wishing you a fruitful week at school. (Goodbye Boys and Girls!)
