2. To show joint possession, the apostrophe is used with the last noun concerned.

To show individual possession, make all nouns possessive.

Keith’s and Bryan’s proposals for the projects are completely different. 3. If the plural noun ends with -s, add an apostrophe after the -s.

The peacocks’ feathers are colourful.

4. If the plural noun does not end with -s, add an apostrophe, and then write the -s.

The children’s shoes are on sale.

5. If a noun is compound, use ‘s (or s’) with the last part of the noun. I placed my cellphone in my mother-in-law’s bag.

6. When a name ends with –s, the apostrophe alone is added. the Charles’ property

COMPOSITION

WITH MY CLASSMATES

Read and discuss the notes.

The First Paragraph: The Introduction

The first paragraph will introduce your topic.

The introduction is the most important paragraph because it provides direction for the entire composition.

It also sets the tone, and you want to grab the reader’s attention with interest and clarity. The best way to tackle the introduction is to:

• describe your main idea, or what the composition is about, in one sen tence. You can usually use the composition prompt or question to form this sentence.

• use three key words, phrases or ideas that support your controlling sentence in order of importance. • develop a controlling statement using these ideas.

Ending the Introduction with a Controlling Statement Study these examples.

Example1

The Role of the Family

The family is a very important unit of society. In a family, members live and work together to develop relationships, morals, and values. A family can help a child learn to love, get his first education and develop responsibility.

Example 2

The Role of Flight Attendants

Flight attendants welcome the passengers on the aeroplane. They help to put away coats and give pillows and blankets to those who wish. They also serve meals to the passengers. The elderly, the sick and young children are given greater attention by the attendants. The attendants demonstrate to everyone the steps they must follow in an emergency problem on the aeroplane. The job of a flight attendant is to make sure passengers in the aeroplane are comfortable, well- served and safe.

ON MY OWN Exercise

Write an introductory paragraph on the topic ‘The Role of Your Parents’

COMPREHENSION

ON MY OWN

Read the passage carefully then answer the questions which follow.

Among the animals of the world, one of the most talented is the spider. With its silken webs it can construct suspension bridges, beautiful designs, and insect traps. The spider might be thought of as one of nature’s greatest engineers.

Spiders can be found in all parts of the world except where it is extremely cold. They cannot survive in cold or Polar Regions covered with snow because of lack of food.

People sometimes mistakenly refer to spiders as insects. Unlike insects which have six legs and three body segments, spiders have eight legs and two body segments.

Although there are many different kinds of spiders in the United States only two of these are considered dangerous. These are the Black Widow and the Brown House Spider. Spiders are useful to man because they destroy many kinds of harmful insects.
