Crane defeat Uitvlugt in WDFA Pre-Season Championsh­ip

Simpson, Mekdeci, Benn capture titles at BCQS Squash Championsh­ip

- Fraser clinched the women’s accolade on Friday

Crane overcame a one-goal deficit to beat Uitvlugt 2-1 when the West Demerara Football Associatio­n (WDFA) Pre-Season Championsh­ip continued on Friday evening at the National Track and Field Centre, Leonora.

Following a scoreless first-half period, Uitvlugt opened the scoring in the form of Kevis Fraser, who found the back of the net in the 65th minute.

However, two goals in the space of five minutes sealed the come-frombehind win for Crane. Parity was restored to proceeding­s in the 80th minute, as the equalizer emanated from the boot of Kwesi Henry.

The comeback win was then sealed in the 85th minute as Kadeem Andrews etched his name on the scorer’s sheet. The event continues today at the same venue with another round of matches.

Joseph Mekdeci won the men’s 55-64 accolade, while Barbadians Shawn Simpson and Donn Benn captured the men’s 30-44 and 45-54 titles, respective­ly, when the BCQS Squash Masters Championsh­ip concluded yesterday at the Georgetown Club facility, Camp Street.

In the men’s 55-64 final, Mekdeci dismissed Peter Harris in straight sets 11-7, 11-6, and 11-5. In similar fashion, Simpson crushed Robert Cameron in straight sets 116, 11-5, and 11-5 in the final of the men’s 30-44 division. Likewise, Benn defeated Khalil Alli in straight sets 11-2, 11-2, and 11-2 in the men’s 45-54 segment.

Meanwhile, Lydia Fraser won the women’s 35 & Over title after ending the division with an unbeaten record following an 11-5, 11-2, and 11-0 victory over Tian Edwards on Saturday.

Also, in the third-place playoff of the men’s 30-44 division, Reagan Pollard overcame Peter De Groot 11-9, 4-11, 11-7, and 11-4.

In the third-place encounter in the men’s 55-64 division, Dean Straker brushed aside Orson Simpson 11-7, 11-7, and 11-6. In the men’s 45-54 third-place playoff, Ryan Rahaman bested Medhi Ramdhani 11-8, 11-5, and 11-1.
