The Introduction- Using Historical Facts

One way to write an introduction is to start with general historical facts then state the specific idea in the controlling sentence.

Example

Sandwiches originated in Europe but are now found in various versions in many countries. According to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, this type of snack food is said to be the namesake of John Montagu, fourth Earl of Sandwich. Sandwiches may be made from plain, whole wheat or homemade bread with a variety of filling such as cheese, chicken and tuna. Condiments are often used to improve flavour and texture. Making cheese sandwiches is an easy recipe which requires few ingredients and a simple procedure.

ON MY OWN

Using a few historical facts, write an introductory paragraph of your own on the topic “Mashramani Celebrations in Guyana” (Remember that you are not to copy information from a book without stating the source)

COMPREHENSION ON MY OWN

Read the passage carefully then answer the questions which follow.

The noise was coming from downstairs. Yes, I was sure. It sounded as if someone was breaking something in the kitchen. Bang! Bang1 Bang! It went while my heart almost jumped out of my body. Everyone else in the house was asleep and this was what made me more afraid than ever.

Could it be a burglar? Burglars were common in those days. Was it Timmy, our pet cat? No, it was not Timmy for we always made sure to put him out at nights after feeding him. I was hoping and praying that the banging would stop but it seemed louder and louder. I must do something now, I thought. Shaking with fear, I silently crept out of bed. Where did I get the courage? I do not know.

I was now peeping through a wide enough space in our back door at the top of the staircase that leads into the kitchen. From here I could see what was going on. There was Timmy, trying to jump through one of the kitchen windows which was left open. Each time Timmy tried, he failed but the window banged. How could this have all happened? Someone had forgotten to put Timmy out and to close the kitchen window. Thank heavens it was not a burglar. My heart now began to beat normally.

I opened the door, went into the kitchen, put Timmy out and closed the kitchen window. I then went to bed and slept soundly till the morning.
