Monuments

Vocabulary Building:

From 2B

Monument: Something that serves as a memorial, especially a building, pillar, stone, or statue honoring a person or event.

Several monuments are located within the region. The Enmore Martyrs’ Monument is found at Enmore on East Coast Demerara. This monument was created in honour of sugar workers who lost their lives on the estate there. The Non-Aligned, Liberation, and 1763 monuments are also found in the region.

Arches in Region Four

The region has several arches. One which is found in Brickdam in the vicinity of the Ministry of Health is the Independence Arch. It represents an important time in the history of the country. It was a gift to the people of Guyana from the bauxite company. In 1966, when Mr. Forbes Burnham was Prime Minister at the time of the country’s independence, he received the arch which was constructed out of aluminum and has a base of quartz Mazaruni stone. The arch is a reminder of the struggle of the Guyanese to free themselves from being ruled by Great Britain.

Economic Activities

Coconuts and ground provisions grow well in some parts of the region. Farmers transport the produce to municipal markets. Trucks, vans, and boats - the main means of transportation - take produce out of the riverine areas where there is abundant growth.

● Rice

● Livestock

● Fruits and Ground Provision

● Manufacturing (furniture, foodstuff, clothing, and textiles)

I hope you had fun learning about our fourth Administrative Region: Region Four: Demerara/Mahaica. In our next lesson, we are going to study extensively Region 5: Demerara/Berbice.

Until next time, stay safe, boys and girls!

What does the 1763 Monument signify? The 1763 Monument proudly stands in the Square of the Revolution in the Guyanese capital of Georgetown. Unveiled in 1976, it commemorates the Berbice Slave Rebellion of 1763, a major event in Guyana’s anti-colonial struggles.
