Gold is Money, North East advance in Guinness ‘Greatest of the Streets’

-

Two-time defending champions Gold is Money, North East La Penitence, and Laing Avenue were among the teams to earn their place in the group stage when the Guinness ‘Greatest of the Streets’ Georgetown edition commenced at the National Park Tarmac, Thomas Lands, on Friday evening.

The West Ruimveldt-based outfit, Gold is Money, squeaked past the Renegade All-Stars 2-1 on penalty kicks, following a scoreless regulation and extra intervals.

North East La Penitence dispatched the Ballers 2-1. The combination of Kelvin Moore and Akil Plass recorded conversions in the sixth and 22nd minutes, respectively. On target in the loss was Sam Barnes in the 26th minute.

Meanwhile, Laing Avenue Ballers required a ‘Guinness Goal’ (GG) [a goal scored in the final three minutes of normal time and the final two minutes of extra time counts as two] in the 37th minute to defeat Festival City 2-0.

In other results, Rising Stars came from behind to defeat Alexander Village 3-2. Daniel Ross tallied a GG in the 28th minute of normal time, while Jamal Williams found the back of the net in the seventh minute. On the other side, Kenroy Dominick recorded a double in the fourth and ninth minutes.

On the other hand, the Sophia and Bent Street Young Gunners encounter was deemed a no-contest by the officials and organisers after a brief altercation between the teams. This resulted in both teams being expelled from the tournament. The event resumes today at the same venue with another round of matches.

Meanwhile, Colours Boutique continued its partnership with the Guinness ‘Greatest of the Streets’ Championship by once again contributing the team uniforms for the entirety of the 2024 season.

The presentation occurred at the company’s Robb Street location. The establishment will outfit the teams in the Georgetown, Berbice, East Coast Demerara, Bartica, Linden, Essequibo, and West Demerara zones.

More than 130 teams and 800 players will benefit from this gesture. The company will also serve as the official match ball supplier for the season.

Representative Rodwell Greaves presented the uniforms and balls on behalf of the entity. He stated that the company is proud to be associated with the event, which has developed into a community phenomenon, and is more than willing to add its contribution to fostering social cohesion amongst the participants.
