There are two administrative centers in Region 7: Kamarang and Bartica. These two communities are extremely far apart geographically.

Let’s Discuss the Town Bartica

Bartica, Essequibo, is a town on the left bank of the Essequibo River in Cuyuni-Mazaruni, at the confluence of the Cuyuni and Mazaruni Rivers with the Essequibo River in Guyana. It is the regional capital of Cuyuni-Mazaruni.

Fact/Tip: The name Bartica is an Amerindian word which means “Red Earth.” The soil of the settlement is of a reddish colour. This area stands at the apex of a triangle of land which is flanked by the Essequibo River on the east, Mazaruni river on the west and Roth’s Trace at its base.

The layout of Bartica follows a pattern of a lot with avenues. There seven avenues and nine streets. The avenues run north to south while the streets run east to west.

Bartica is considered the gateway to the interior. Persons seeking to travel to the interior, such as Cuyuni or Mazaruni to mine for gold, stop first at Bartica.

Bartica Regatta

During the Easter weekend every year, Bartica a town at the confluence of the Mazaruni, Cuyuni and Essequibo Rivers hosts the Bartica Regatta, with a growing variety of entertaining holiday activities including water sports (featuring mostly speed boats), cricket, boxing, soccer, talent shows, a street parade and party, and a Miss Bartica Regatta Pageant. The Regatta attracts people from all parts of Guyana, and even from other countries.

Regatta

A regatta is a series of boat races. The term comes from the Venetian language, with regata meaning "contest" and typically describes racing events of rowed or sailed watercraft, although some powerboat race series are also called regattas.

Women in the region use straw, balata and bamboo to produce beautiful, skillfully hand-crafted vases, hats, mats, hammocks, bird cages, bags and crab containers, among other things. They find market for their goods in the towns and villages. Hunting for birds and wild animals provides food for the inhabitants of the region. Some of it is brought to other regions.
