$30m repairs on Parika stelling linkspan bridge completed

-

The Parika Stelling linkspan bridge is back in operation following a successful $30 million repair job, a Department of Public Information (DPI) release stated on Friday.

The bridge was declared operational by Minister of Public Works, Juan Edghill, during a site inspection on Friday, it added.

The linkspan, a crucial drawbridge for vehicles using the MV Sabanto ferry, had sustained significant damage which required immediate attention.

According to the DPI, Edghill informed that the remedial works were completed two weeks ago, restoring the MV Sabanto ferry’s daily operations of transporting passengers and cargo.

Meanwhile, Superintendent of Parika Stelling, Tamesh Persaud, disclosed that the repairs were a collaborative effort between the Demerara Harbour Bridge (DHB) Corporation and private contractors.

This aim of this approach, he explained, was to swiftly restore ferry operations and alleviate disruptions caused by the damaged linkspan. Further, the rehabilitation works have significantly improved the efficiency of operations. “We are in a better position in terms of repair, smooth flow of traffic, no complaints at this point,” he stated.

Additionally, the Ministry of Public Works in partnership with the DHB will be initiating the tender process for the rehabilitation of the catwalk at Parika Stelling. The catwalk is in need of immediate attention as its condition has deteriorated to the point where it poses a safety hazard for staff.

The release explained that the rehabilitation project will include relocating and repairing the catwalk, along with driving fender piles to reinforce its structural integrity. Similarly, significant rehabilitation works geared at ensuring safety and uninterrupted traffic flow have been carried out on the wharf’s deck.
